News - Leafield Wins contract for S2o87 Cable Cutters

IBuilding on its success in the S2031 programmes Leafield is delighted to have been awarded the contract to develop and supply the cable cutter systems for the new S2087 Towed Sonar by Thales Underwater Systems who were awarded the initial contract in the spring of 2001. S2087 will be the most advanced sonar deployed to date by the Royal Navy. It is to be fitted to Type 23 Duke class frigates and will provide the capability to hunt the latest classes of submarines at great distances.

The system consist of two main off board elements the Towed Body and the Towed Array. Each type utilises very different cable profiles, one of which makes use of aerofoil shaped fairings. The challenge for Leafield is to provide a cutter that is common to both types of cable and can be used in restricted spaces. Because of the self-contained nature of the Leafield pyromechanisms and the innovative capabilities of the staff, Leafield have been chosen to support Thales in their £160 million programme.

Mr Bob Dyke, Managing Director of LEL said ‘The Sonar 2087 is to replace the Current passive S2031 systems on all type 23 frigates where used. We at Leafield are very pleased about our part in continuing to develop and provide such important safety critical items. Hardware deliveries are due mid 2004 and Leafield relishes the opportunity to demonstrate its capabilities in design and flexibility within the challenging time-scales’.
